After a wait of about a year, Maguire's Nissan has its first electric car on site.

The Nissan Leaf is the first all-electric car to hit the consumer market.

Laura Kale, the West Lebanon Township dealer's Internet sales manager, said the black hatchback arrived earlier this month. Another light blue model was at Maguire's Friday, waiting to be picked up by a customer who ordered it about a year ago.

The base price for the 2012 Leaf SV on Maguire's lot is $35,200; a Leaf SL with a few more features carries a price tag of $37,200. Both models have potential federal tax savings of $7,500, according to Nissan's website, www.nissanusa.com/leaf.

They are manufactured at plants in Tennessee and California.

Although the Leaf can travel up to 90 mph, it won't go far. Kale said the car's range is 96 to 102 miles. A full charge can last 22 hours.

"If you want a Leaf, you need to have your house assessed by a vendor that installs a docking station," Kale said. A docking station costs about $2,000.

Maguire's, 2001 Cumberland St., has an onsite docking station; the next closest one is at Hershey's Chocolate World. Sheetz and the Pennsylvania Turnpike are considering installing docking stations, Kale said.

Although the time from order to arrival is between six and eight months, Kale said that time should decrease as production increases.

Orders can be placed via the Nissan website.

This Is a Really Cool History Lesson!!!!

THE GOLDBERG BROTHERS - THE INVENTORS OF THE AUTOMOBILE AIR CONDITIONER

The four Goldberg brothers - Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max - invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner.

On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most
exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter.

Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car.

They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately.

The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent.

The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label - The Goldberg Air-Conditioner - on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed.

Now old man Ford was proud of the Ford name, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Ford cars.

They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown.

And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max on the controls.
